For the most parts, there are 3 categories of computers: Mac, PC & portable.

Mac

Macintosh computers are usually sold as a complete system. Limited options are available within each system. This helps ensure compatibility of the individual components that make up the computer system. Since the weakest link in any system creates a choke point, a system is only as good as the weakest part. By controlling their quality in this manner, Macs typically perform very well but is priced higher. Consequently, fewer consumers are willing to pay the higher price which translate to fewer units sold. This means fewer software companies are willing to expend resources to create software for Macs.

Macs are outstanding for graphic and audio editing. Professionals in high quality graphic/multimedia production generally prefer Mac.

PC

PC is short for personal computers (so, it's redundant to say PC computers). As a category, it's the most popular computers among consumers because its design allow for many interchangeable parts and components making it attractive for manufacturers of components and system retailers. Lower price is the biggest attraction and many cost effective upgrades are available. Dell. Gateway, HP, Acer, etc. may appear to be different brands but they are really different combinations of similar components. When shopping for one of these, it's helpful to understand how each component effects the price and performance of the system. Remember that the choke point is the weakest link. So, it's a waste of money to pay for some expensive components and not be able to take full advantage of what you paid for by cutting corners in the wrong places. Portable

Portable computers are commonly known as laptops, notebooks, tablets, thinkpads, etc. They are essentially a portable version of the Mac or PC. Their costs are higher since their components have to be miniaturized, . But, as they gain popularity, prices have come down considerably due to cost savings of mass production. They can be used virtually anywhere because they can run on rechargeable battery and are smaller and lighter. Consider the pro's and con's regarding size and weight when shopping. Prices are greatly effected by screen size, lightless & thickness. Be aware that the screen is the biggest consumer of the battery when compromising between screen size and battery life. Choose a smaller screen if you need longer battery life.
